This book is intended as an historical reader, an elementary text-book in the history of our country, or as an introduction or supplement to any of the excellent text-books on the history of the United States now in use.
The aim has been not only to interest children in the great men of their own country, but to stimulate them to the cultivation of the lofty virtues of which they read, and to instil within their hearts a deep love for their native land.
All the main facts in our early history have been given as simply and vividly as possible, and the lessons of patriotism, truthfulness, courage, patience, honesty, and industry taught by the lives of our principal heroes are carefully enforced. Great pains have also been taken to relate all the well-known anecdotes and quote the famous speeches which are so frequently alluded to in our current literature.
Although this book ends with the Revolutionary War, the story of our country is continued on the same lines in a companion volume entitled "The Story of the Great Republic;" yet each book is independent of the other and can be used separately.
So simply worded as to be easily intelligible to average children of ten or twelve years of age, the text is further arranged in short paragraphs, to facilitate its use as a reader in large classes.

Even reading the sample is enough to show you how racist this book is. I understand the viewpoint of the time when it was written - but this does not make it an appropriate book for teaching history to children. Please read the sample, it should be enough.
I cannot imagine how this book has gotten five-star reviews. This is truly one of the most racist books I have ever read. The terms used to describe people are outdated and derogatory, but what is truly offensive are the so-called ethnographical and racial "descriptions" of various peoples that are based on nothing more than a white supremacist worldview. I think it would be a travesty if a child learned "history" form this book. Memoria Press sells an edited version that combines this book with its successor, The Great Republic. The most offensive bits have been deleted or changed.
Too intense.
I love this simplicity of this book for myself. I use it as a teachers reference as I teach my kids about history in your rc homeschool.
We will start this next month in our home school. Just skimming through it I can tell it will be a super supplement to The Story of the World. I am SO excited to use it! Looks great fro grammar and logic stage students.
Complete, well written, short and to the point, it was a great purchase to cover all the basics of American history.
