A fascinating look at the politics of the Arab world in the 1920’s. These were originally Confidential Information Despatches for General Headquarters (in England) written by Gertrude Bell which were gathered and printed in the 1940’s.

...in a very contentious period of British intervention into the affairs of the Arab Peninsula and the Middle East during the unstable years of war in 1914-18. Ms Bell is one of the few individuals of her time gifted with clear insight into the area and its denizens without carrying a particular agenda (she was also a rare woman in holding a commission in the British Army as an adviser) and she has the unique perspective of the seasoned traveler to places known by few. Her input to the Cairo-based Arab Bureau's newsletter gave some balance in that her experience and expertise was mostly in the region now known as Iraq; an area managed and maintained by the other major British outpost, the India Office. The historiographical element is essential, as the Arab Bureau was more focused on the peninsula and the eastern Mediterranean, covered at length by the writings of D.G.Hogarth and T.E.Lawrence among others; while Ms Bell offers a sane counterpoint to the romanticized chronicle of the conflict (the Arab Revolt) described in "Seven Pillars of Wisdom," or the heavily pro-Sharifian viewpoint held by most people working in the bureau. A fine firsthand resource.Product details

The Arab War edition by Gertrude Bell Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews
We were taught very little about the Arab country when I was in school. How can we relate to what is going on now in this day and age.
GREAT BACKROUND RESEARCH MATERIALS
Tough read
Considering the ongoing news from the middle east this little book offers a perspective that, though dated, is extremely relevant as well as really well written. I intend to read much more by and about Gertrude Bell.
Great stuff - authoritative and authentic - straight from the front - so relevant to current affairs in the region - How she understood the Arab world !! She was a real classical scholar.
And what a women - she went to Tehran in full knowledge that there was a Cholera out break. Such physical courage !!
A bit difficult to follow and read but wanted more information about what happened after reading Seven Pillars of Wisdom and the story of Lawrence of Arabia. Miss Bell is a fascinating character and someone I'd like to read more about.
For me, this book was a challenging read. I bought it because I had learned so much from Scott Anderson's "Lawrence in Arabia" and wanted to learn more about the Middle East around the time of the First World War. I found Gertrude Bell's articles from the Arab Bulletin very difficult to follow because so many names, locations, and tribes were mentioned as though the reader would be familiar with them--and if you worked in British intelligence during WWI they probably were--but I was not. I did enjoy the excerpt from " Revolt in the Desert" by Thomas C. Barger and the excerpt from "Ibn Saud King by Conquest" by Nestor J. Sander, which were included at the end of the Gertrude Bell book. I suspect those two books will be much more useful to me than "The Arab War" was.
